Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
