As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
